With Microsoft Ignite 2020 fast approaching, Microsoft MVP Jasper Oosterveld (@jasoosterveld) shares his top picks for the Microsoft Teams management- and Microsoft 365 compliance-related Ignite sessions you won't want to miss!

This year, I was supposed to visit Microsoft Ignite in person for the very first time. Unfortunately, this was also the year that a novel pandemic swept the globe, forcing a mass transition to fully remote work and driving most conferences online. The same applied for Microsoft Ignite.

The entirely virtual Microsoft Ignite 2020 conference will run from September 22nd through September 24th—and looks like it includes a lot of great sessions! And since finding the right session can sometimes be challenging (there are over 700 sessions listed in the session catalog this year!), I’ve done the work for you.

My focus for this year is Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 compliance, so I put together this list of my top 10 Ignite sessions that will help you manage and secure your Microsoft 365 and Teams environments!

Ignite 2020 sessions: Microsoft Teams

With the move towards fully remote work, Microsoft Teams has seen a huge increase in usage and adoption. This trend has caused Microsoft to invest in the release of new features and updates—and I'm expecting loads of demos and announcements at this year's Ignite.

This surge in usage and releases means that IT departments will need to focus more and more on implementing a successful management strategy. That's why I've decided to focus on the management and meetings side of Microsoft Teams.

Here are my five recommended Ignite 2020 sessions on Microsoft Teams:

  1. What's new in Microsoft Teams security and compliance
  2. On Skype for Business? Design your path to Microsoft Teams
  3. Meet smarter, stay focused, and achieve more with Microsoft Teams meetings
  4. One place for admins to manage Microsoft Teams: What's new in Teams manageability
  5. Essentials for managing Microsoft Teams; Advanced manageability controls

What's new in Microsoft Teams security and compliance

Microsoft Teams is used to share valuable and sensitive data, both internally and externally. That's why it's crucial to provide a secure collaboration environment. I'm excited about this session, and hope to learn a lot more about security and compliance for Microsoft Teams. John Gruszczyk is going to dive into topics such as keeping information protected against data leaks, enabling safe and inclusive meetings, and maintaining a compliant organization across worldwide regulations and business requirements.

Session codes: DB140, DB140-R1, DB140-R2
Time slots: Wednesday, September 23rd / 6:15 - 6:45 PM EDT
Thursday, September 24th / 10:15 - 10:45 AM EDT
Thursday, September 24th / 2:15 AM - 2:45 AM EDT
Speaker: John Gruszczyk

On Skype for Business? Design your path to Microsoft Teams

Are your customers (or your company) still using Skype for Business? Do you want to learn more about moving towards Microsoft Teams? Then this session is a must see! Especially for customers using Skype for Business Online. Microsoft is deprecating Skype for Business Online on July 31st, 2021. The presenters promise to share their best practices, resources, and guidance.

Meet smarter, stay focused, and achieve more with Microsoft Teams meetings

Making the shift from face-to-face meetings to mostly online meetings has been difficult! During this session, I'm looking forward to receiving helpful tips. And hopefully the presenters are going to share some new Microsoft Teams features!

One place for admins to manage Microsoft Teams: What's new in Teams manageability

Microsoft Teams supports employees with collaboration and communication in their daily work lives; a wide selection of existing features are available, and many more are on the way. But how are IT departments going to successfully manage their Microsoft Teams deployment? The presenters promise to introduce new capabilities around the Teams administration portal, and discuss what's new in policies, app and device management, reporting, analytics, troubleshooting, and PowerShell. That's a lot of topics to cover in 30 minutes! I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see it unfold!

Essentials for managing Microsoft Teams; Advanced manageability controls

This session seems like a follow-up to the previous session I mentioned. Hopefully, this one will dive deeper into the management controls for Microsoft Teams. The session description promises the speakers will walk through the full scope of controls—from enabling a smoother onboarding experience to ongoing maintenance and optimization of your Teams environment. Sounds like a must-see for Microsoft Teams administrators!

Ignite 2020 sessions: Compliance

This past year, I started down a new path in my personal Microsoft journey: I've switched to a focus on governance and compliance. Compliance, especially, is crucial for managing the lifecycle of your sensitive data and preventing accidental data leaks. I'm expecting a lot of valuable announcements at this year's Ignite regarding Microsoft Information Protection—providing businesses with tools to apply a successful information governance and protection strategy.

Here are my five recommended Ignite 2020 sessions on compliance:

  1. Be a risk management hero with intelligent data protection and compliance solutions
  2. Supercharge information protection and governance across cloud, on-premise, endpoints and remote work environments
  3. Stop managing compliance with spreadsheets! Simplify and extend compliance beyond Microsoft 365
  4. Manage information lifecycle and records intelligently with Microsoft Information Governance
  5. Know your data, protect your data and prevent data loss with Microsoft Information Protection

Supercharge information protection and governance across cloud, on-premise, endpoints and remote work environments

Stop managing compliance with spreadsheets! Simplify and extend compliance beyond Microsoft 365

A successful compliance strategy is crucial for business all around the globe. Unfortunately, creating one is not an easy task. Manage information lifecycle and records intelligently with Microsoft Information Governance

Managing the lifecycle of your data is not an easy task—especially for organizations who need to comply with strict regulations. And keeping more than you need, aka "data hoarding", is also a threat. Microsoft 365 provides built-in information governance and record management capabilities to help you manage data lifecycle and records. I hope the speakers are going to focus on the intelligent features of these services!

Know your data, protect your data and prevent data loss with Microsoft Information Protection

Protecting sensitive data has always been important. But over the course of this past year, we've seen a rise in questions and requests from our customers around this topic. Microsoft Information Protection is a service that discovers, classifies, labels, protects, and audits sensitive data. That's one part of the story. The other part is that it prevents the intentional and accidental loss of sensitive data. I hope to learn more from this session so that I can go back to our customers with new tips, tricks, and advice to solve their compliance business needs!
